What teachers need? First, want to share an Instagram account that has caught the eye of the TODAY Show.
Been following Jared Lamb, Principal Jared Lamb or better known as @principal_lamb (IG) for about three years now. This guy pushes a cart around the hallways of his school located somewhere in a southern state – maybe Louisiana, and should probably double check that before sharing this! 😊
And maybe he will see this and want to be a GLAMoms Meet a Dad, what do you think?
Back to why I am sharing about Principal Lamb. 🐿️
While the idea shared on the TODAY Show was a bit more directly referencing what he, as an administrator could do for his educators, it is a message we will expand upon. Most times he is sharing an idea, while watching him do something really simple and wearing a new pair Jordans while pushing his mobile office. His ideas are simple: Support educators.
He also is big on clear communication, consistency, consequences and relevant policy and procedure that wisely uses time. He seems to be a guy who is not big on doing something simply because it is the way it has been done. And I think it is safe to say, complacency is not something he accepts often. He is clear and he is present. Principal Lamb also does a good job sharing with parents a perspective not often communicated or maybe he is expanding upon ideas some may assume parents know, and many may not.
As mentioned, he supports ideas that supports educators.
Oh, and Christine here, and coming from a family with many educators, I have learned a lot. Sometimes I forget that not everyone has a brother, SIL or an aunt or uncle to bounce school ideas off of. It truly is a gift.
A gift in the form of a resource handy and while it surely has given me a bit too much information about processes or behind the school-scenes a couple times, they collectively have taught me how to be a good teacher’s parent.
And that leads me to the reason for this post. A suggestion. Ask them what they need.
Chances are you either have or soon will receive a letter from your teacher with what he/she likes, favorite treats, hobbies and a few things for the teacher to share a bit about him/herself before school starts!
On this list there will be both needs and wants and every item most likely will be a community item. Also in this envelope of papers you may find an email address. Here is the suggestion part. Send an email before the first day of school and I will even get it started for you:
Dear Miss/Mrs/Ms/Mr _________,
Taking a quick break from summer to say hello! Thank you for sending a letter to _____! He/she is looking forward to being in your class!
We plan to get the items you suggested for _____.
What do you need in your classroom to make this a successful year? I/we know a lot of time and energy goes into each school year and we would like to help make sure you get what you need.
Please give it some thought and I/we look forward to hearing back from you, either now or when there is a need during the school year!
Thanks again,
Your name
_____’s mom/dad/grown-up/etc.
If this type of letter is not your style, here is another thing to consider, for the monthly needs, auto ship new dry erase markers, Sharpies, Flair pens, antibacterial wipes or SNACKS to the classroom. Set it up and begin sending now, then put a reminder in your calendar to stop June 1.
Just ideas, and there are lots of them out there! Thanks for reading along! Happy school year!
