Sun Safety Guide with Jess from NECTAR body·face·skin
Spring Break is around the corner…time to enjoy some fun in the sun, wisely of course! As a Dermatology Nurse Practitioner, I am geeked to share few quick sun tips:
“Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek, Slide” is a catchy alliteration (certainly a mouthful) for reducing unhealthy sun exposure. The meaning behind this slogan is:
Slip on a shirt, rash guard, or clothing to block the sun’s harmful rays.
Slop on sunscreen. One ounce, which is approximately a golf ball or shot glass full is the appropriate amount for the average young adult body. Two finger lengths are a good amount for the face.
Slap on a wide-brimmed hat to keep your head, neck, and face protected.
Seek shade during peak UV hours, typically from 10-4; take shade breaks.
Slide on sunnies to save your peepers; sunglasses aren’t just an accessory.
Like a broken record playing lame lyrics, we are often told lousy information about sunscreen. Sunscreen choices seem to be the same every year. With many products on the market performing subpar or containing potentially harmful ingredients, I’m here to share quality products for you and your kiddos. Here’s the gist:
- Avoid sprays
- Shoot for spf 50+, apply proper amount and reapply every 2 hours
- Top Picks for babies/kids: Baby Bum, Badger, Blue Lizard, SunTribe, Hello Bello
- Top Picks for you: ☀️SkinBetter Science Tone Smart, ☀️ZO Broad Spectrum, Blue Lizard, Badger
To slide my nerd glasses further down my nose and lean in to take it a little further, we should be looking for more than just UVA/UVB protection. Photoaging, skin damage, cancer risk, and sunspots are caused not only by UVA/UVB, but also high energy visibility light (HEV), Blue light (electronics/screens) and Infrared light (IR). The recommendations above with the ☀️ provide that protection as well.
Now you know, so go have fun in the sun!
