A Conversation With Sonia De Los Santos: Music, Joy, and Feeling at Home - Greater Lansing Area Moms

As we are into January, the time of year when routines are resetting, winter may be feeling long, and families are craving something meaningful to do together, GLAMoms found something that will fits the bill.

We had the opportunity to sit down (virtually) with Sonia De Los Santos, who will be performing at Wharton Center on January 10.

From the very start of our conversation, it was clear that Sonia brings something special to the stage and it is not just music, but intention.

Her concerts are designed to feel welcoming, interactive, and joyful. She describes them less as traditional performances and more like a shared celebration (she suggests a party). In a space where families can sing, dance, listen quietly, or move around in whatever way feels right for them. And for this performance, that inclusivity is especially intentional, as the show is sensory-friendly, with thoughtful adjustments to sound, lights, and pacing.

What stood out most while talking was how naturally Sonia weaves belonging into everything she does.

She grew up in Monterey, Mexico and learned English as a second language, and that lived experience shapes how she creates bilingual music for families.

She shared that children don’t need to understand every word to feel included, “music does that work for us.” Through melody, rhythm, and storytelling, kids and parents alike are invited into the experience, regardless of the language they speak at home.

We also talked about joy. And not the big, over-the-top kind, but the small, everyday moments that often matter most.

Sonia shared a story her mother told her: that when she was born, she was smiling. That idea of finding joy early and returning to it often has become a connection in her music. And It’s something she hopes families carry with them long after the show ends.

One of the most moving moments she described happens during a song about dreams. During the show, plan for a moment when she asks children and adults to close their eyes and think about their own dreams. Hopes and dreams of all kinds and then singing to those dreams together, she says, brings people closer and creates understanding.

As a parent, that really stayed with me. It felt like a quiet reminder that dreams grow stronger when they’re shared. Once they’re spoken, they’re no longer carried alone. In sharing our hopes, we invite others in, and in doing so, we begin building the kind of community that helps dreams take shape.

Our full conversation dives deeper into all of this: music, language, joy, dreams, and what it means to feel at home, even while traveling.
