Boss Babe! These are the first words that come to mind when we introduce our Meet a Mom this week. Ellie Wong has made a name for herself in Lansing and made it her passion to support other local businesses every step of the way. And when you leave her salon chair, you will understand exactly why she is called Lansing’s very own “hype girl!”

After seven years working as a stylist and color specialist in the Greater Lansing area, Ellie opened Holiday. An upscale, boho style salon in Lansing’s historic Westside Neighborhood. A beautiful, quiet community within the capital city. An area that boasts tree lined streets, historic homes, family-owned restaurants and friendly neighbors. And also home of the Holiday.

The salon opened just a few short months before the pandemic. Ellie’s positive attitude radiated through the challenges of the past year and continues to shine. We know from personal experience that when you enter her salon, you feel welcome, comfortable and beautiful. She balances all of this while being a wife and a mom to four gorgeous girls!

Welcome, Ellie!

Hi Ellie! Please introduce yourself-
Hey hey! I’m Ellie Wong. I’m a mama to four beautiful daughters and a business owner here in Lansing!

Where are you from originally and where do you live now?
Originally, I’m from and raised in Okemos. My family currently lives in Lansing in the beautiful Westside Neighborhood.

You’re a mom of 4 beautiful girls ! What are their ages? What is your favorite thing about being a mom?
I’m so lucky to be a Mama to my four girls! Clementine and Scarlett are twins and they are 10 years old. Next, Juniper is 4 and Goldie is 2. Fun fact- the two littles share a birthday!

My favorite thing about being a Mom is watching the world through their eyes. They see magic and the best in everyone. They’re filthy creatures with hearts of gold!

We are big into self-care for moms as hard as it is to find the time, what is something you do just for yourself?
Self care is the fastest way to be the best for yourself and your family! I workout regularly, practice yoga and meditate, meditate, meditate! Set aside time for yourself!

What are your go-to restaurants and shops in the Greater Lansing area?
Favorite restaurants? Oh baby, let me count the ways! Restaurants – Our family LOVES Harry’s place. They’re a Lansing staple and right in the middle of our neighborhood. For a nice date night out we love EnVie or Cosmos/Zoobies. Favorite food truck is Picnic (owned by fellow Lansing lady) and guilty pleasure is Kewpees!

Shops- Grace, Bad Annie’s, October Moon and Curvaceous! Old Town General store is great for a quick gift too.

You are a hair stylist and now a business owner of a beautiful salon! Tell us how Holiday came to be?
I get it from my Dad! I grew up with my family owning a business (hey Okemos Music Academy). It was always in my blood. Once I knew my family was complete, I wanted to create a space where everyone felt comfortable. A place for creatives to make a killer career with tons of support. A place that gives back and supports the city that created it! How I created the name? I always threatened my husband that I was going to name one of our daughters, Holiday (call her Holly). So, HAH! I did it. My fifth baby is definitely the salon.

What is the most rewarding part of your career?
I get to connect with people every single day. Real connection, real conversations. All while making them feel their best! Come on! How did I get so lucky? Not to mention, I work with the BEST people ever. Watching them do magic tricks all day is pretty cool.

One thing people would be surprised to know about you…
I LOVE off the grid camping where I can unplug. The more rustic, the better. I just want to wake up on water everyday!

Now some fun ones!

Can’t live without beauty or makeup product – Oligo dry shampoo

Favorite place to visit in Michigan – Detroit

Last book you read –  Gabrielle Bernstein Super Attractor (love her, she changes lives, people!)

Current Binge Shows – The Sinner, rewatching Arrested Development and with the family- American Idol.

Most useful app on your phone – eh? Does text count? Haha! Instagram and Canva for the salon.

Best advice you have for someone looking to start a business of their own ?
Create a community for yourself. Other Business owners and people that want you to succeed. Have a clear and direct vision for your business and don’t let anything compromise that.

Who has most influenced you to be the person you are today?

My Mom, Dad, my children, husband Travis and Oprah Winfrey.

We are honored to have the Holiday be a sponsor of the 2021 Summer Camp Guide! Why did you choose to be a sponsor?
I think Mom groups are so important. We need all the community and support we can get. Especially after this crazy year! These kids are SO EXCITED to leave the house and get into camps. Whatever I can do to help support local moms – I’m in!

Last one! What is next for the Holiday? Any new trends we should know about ?
What’s next is perfecting our craft! In-person education is coming back and we’re all suckers for learning. We’d love to see some new faces in our space too! New trends are fun colors, embracing your natural texture and lived-in, beachy color!
