🍁It only lasts a few weeks.
Maple syrup season usually runs from late February through March, whenever we get those classic Michigan days with freezing nights and warmer afternoons.
🍁It takes a LOT of sap.
It takes about 40 gallons of maple sap to make just 1 gallon of maple syrup.
🍁The sap looks like water.
Fresh sap coming from a tree is clear and slightly sweet, it doesn’t look anything like syrup… Yet.
🍁Cold nights and warm days make it happen.
The freeze-thaw cycle creates pressure inside the tree that pushes sap out through the taps.
🍁Michigan is a maple powerhouse.
Michigan is consistently one of the top maple syrup producers in the United States.
🍁Not all maple syrup tastes the same.
Early maple syrup season syrup is lighter and more delicate. Later season syrup is darker with a stronger maple flavor.
🍁The magic happens in the sugarhouse.
That’s where the sap is boiled down for hours until it becomes the syrup we know and love.
🍁Many places open their doors during maple season.
Maple weekends and sugarbush tours let families see the tapping, boiling, and syrup-making process up close.
🍁Maple syrup isn’t just for pancakes.
Michigan kitchens use it for salad dressings, roasted vegetables, glazes for salmon and chicken, coffee sweetener, and even popcorn and cotton candy!
🍁It’s one of the first real signs of spring in Michigan.
Before the flowers, before the leaves, the buckets start showing up on trees.
And suddenly… winter doesn’t feel quite so long.
🍁Maple Syrup Festivals will soon be underway.🍁
