Juneteenth is celebrated each year on June 19 and honors the day in 1865 when news of emancipation finally reached enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. Today, Juneteenth is recognized as a federal holiday and serves as a time to celebrate freedom, reflect on our nation’s history, and honor the contributions, culture, and resilience of Black Americans.
