It was an absolute joy to sit down with Michigan native and Broadway performer Josh England last week. If his onstage presence is anything like his offstage charm, audiences are in for something special.
Josh is headed to Wharton Center from April 8–15 as part of the national tour of Chicago the Musical. For him, this stop is especially meaningful. Years ago, as a kid, he saw his very first live theater performance—Wicked—at Wharton Center, seated between his mom and his grandma. After the final bow, his grandma leaned in and told him it going to be him up there one day.
And now, here he is.
Though his grandma won’t be in the audience this time, Josh is stepping onto that same stage as a Broadway touring performer. We’re pretty sure she’s still cheering him on—from the best seat in the house.
This moment is even more meaningful because of the woman who helped guide him here—his mom. She was his very first teacher, his number one fan, and to this day, they start every morning with a text and talk throughout the day. Her support, along with his grandma’s early encouragement, has shaped not just his path to the stage—but the person he is today.
Even more exciting? Our conversation with Josh was his very first interview—ever. Not only is this his first national tour, Chicago the Musical also marks his first role as a Broadway touring performer, and we—Greater Lansing Area Moms—are honored to be the first to sit down with him like this and share his story.
Of course, there’s also a bit of playful tension in the air—Josh grew up in Plymouth, just a quick drive from Ann Arbor, and yes, he’s a Michigan fan… which makes his debut on the Michigan State campus at Wharton Center even more fun. Nothing like a little friendly in-state rivalry to keep things spirited!
In our chat, Josh shared what he’s looking forward to during his time at Wharton Center, how he plans to spend time with family while he’s in town, what has guided him to where he is today and more!
We can’t wait to see Josh shine on stage next week.
And finally, thanks you to Wharton Center! We’re always so grateful to Wharton Center for making moments like this possible. 💚
