Looking for a fun outdoor activity that doubles as a wearable keepsake? Grab a few squirt guns, some tie-dye, and a plain white shirt to create a one-of-a-kind patriotic masterpiece.
Supplies
- White cotton t-shirt
- Red and blue tie-dye solution
- Squirt guns
- Rubber bands or cotton string (optional)
- Gallon-sized zip-top bag
- Plastic tablecloth or cardboard
- Gloves (optional)
Directions
Step 1: Prep Your Shirt
Lay your damp shirt flat and pinch, twist, fold, or scrunch it however you’d like. Secure with rubber bands if desired. OR place the shirt over a piece of cardboard and clip it to a fence, as we did.
Step 2: Add the Color
Fill squirt guns with prepared tie-dye solution. Head outside and start spraying! Layer red and blue colors to create your own patriotic design.
Step 3: Let It Set
Place the dyed shirt into a zip-top bag and seal it. Set the bag in a sunny spot for several hours. The warmth helps the colors develop.
Step 4: Rinse and Wash
Remove the shirt from the bag and rinse with cool water until the water runs mostly clear. We used a hose. Wash separately the first time and allow it to air dry.
Step 5: Wear Your Creation
Wave a flag, head to a parade, enjoy fireworks, or simply celebrate summer in your custom Fourth of July shirt.
Tips
- The messier it looks while you’re making it, the better the final reveal usually is.
- Every squirt gun tie-dye shirt turns out differently.
- Consider making matching family shirts for a parade or backyard barbecue.
