Opening her own studio has been a dream and now it’s a reality!

Tiffany shares her favorite part of motherhood, the sweet story of how she met her husband at a potato festival, and how Pilates played a key role in her postpartum healing journey. She also talks about her favorite local spots, her go-to meals, and even her fun hidden talent , who knew!!

Welcome Tiffany! Please introduce yourself, where are you from, where do you reside now, where you went to school, etc?  Please give us an overview of all things, Tiffany!

I was born and raised in Grayling, MI. I’ve lived in the greater Lansing area since 2005. In 2020, we settled in Laingsburg and are so happy to call this small town our home.

My education includes two business degrees and I also attended Baker College, graduating from the Physical Therapist Assistant program.

How old are your children?

Eliza is 7 and Levi is 5.

Where did you and your husband meet?  Or a first date if local?

We met at the Posen Potato Festival 15 years ago. He was wearing an MSU sweatshirt, so I approached him and asked if he lived in East Lansing. Turns out we lived only a few miles from one another. On our first date he took me to Mitchell’s Fish Market.

What do you think is one of the best parts about being a mom?

Witnessing my kids learn and explore the world is amazing. There is nothing like taking-in the pride they feel when they master a new task or find something they are passionate about.

What is a piece of advice for new moms you wish you would have known when you were a new mom?

Don’t hesitate to ask for and accept help if it is offered. You don’t have to “do it all”. Let your best friend come and do your dishes so you can focus on feeding your baby or your neighbor help out so you can nap. You can’t pour from an empty cup and need time to recharge.

You are the owner and founder of Reform Wellness Pilates Studio in Laingsburg! Please tell us how this business came to be.

For 7 years I worked as a Physical Therapist Assistant in outpatient orthopedics. While I loved what I did, due to insurance and other restrictions, I felt limited in what I could do to help someone gain strength and mobility. I turned to the pilates method because I saw its amazing ability to help people move better and reduce pain. I’d always wanted to open a business but the timing was never right.

Once I made the decision that I wanted to open a pilates studio, the perfect little building became available and everything fell into place from there. While it was still a lot of work, it was amazing how everything just felt “right”.

When did you become interested in Pilates?

When I was 19, the local gym asked if I’d be interested in teaching a pilates class. I knew nothing about pilates so I bought the Mari Winsor DVD collection and studied it. I taught pilates mat classes and loved it. Fast forward to after the birth of my son, when I had diastasis recti and pelvic floor issues. I returned to pilates to heal my body postpartum and decided to complete my pilates certification.

What are the benefits of Pilates?

Pilates will help you build a deeper connection with your body. You will not only get stronger and increase flexibility, but will learn control of your body, breathing techniques and improve alignment. You will notice better posture, fewer aches and improved focus. It is so much more than just core work, it focuses on mobility, stability and balance, which can help prevent injury. It will allow you to feel better in your day-to-day life.

What is the difference between floor Pilates and using a reformer machine?

The main difference between mat (floor) pilates and reformer pilates is the equipment. Mat pilates is done on the floor with body weight resistance, so you are using your own body weight and control. It is easily accessible and can be done anywhere. Reformer pilates uses a machine that consists of springs for resistance, a sliding carriage and straps.

The reformer adds resistance, which can make exercises more challenging, while also having the option to give support. Reformer pilates is a great option for both people just starting out, as well as those recovering from an injury.

What is the most rewarding part of owning your own business? Most challenging?

The most rewarding part of owning a business is seeing and hearing the impact the business has on our community. Particularly in the fitness industry, we have the unique opportunity to help people feel better and more confident in their daily lives. Being able to witness people reaching their goals and hearing their success stories will never get old.

My greatest challenge in owning a business is striking a balance between family life and the business.

What is the first thing you do when you walk in the door after a long day?

Hug and kiss my kids and husband. Always.

Here are a couple of questions to get to know you better 🙂

Favorite account or two on Instagram?

Oh gosh…too many to choose from! I tend to tune into accounts that focus on parenting, home decor and of course….pilates!

Last book you read?

I love reading but don’t end up with much time for it. I believe my last book was “The Woman in Me”, by Britney Spears.

Favorite go to meal after a busy day?

I’m an Italian girl, so anything with sauce and pasta wins!

What is your favorite TV show or series?

Comedy is my absolute favorite. Modern Family and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel are at the top of the list.

Stay in or go out?

I’m a homebody.

Must have beauty or skincare product?

Blue Lapis oil is my new obsession.

Are you a morning person, or a night owl?

Definitely a night owl. Although I do enjoy how productive I feel when I start my day early and get a lot done.

Where are some of your favorite places locally to spend time with your family/family favorites – restaurants, attractions, events, parks, etc?

The kids love the East Lansing Aquatic Center and Patriarche Park. We never miss the spring-time festival/carnival and music in the park in Laingsburg.

What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?

I can tie a vast array of balloon animals.

We LOVE learning this so much, what a fun talent to have!
