It is National School Bus Safety Week | Greater Lansing Area Moms

The third week in October is National School Bus Safety Week each year! A dedicated week to address the importance of school bus safety.

Here are 2 websites with lots of information for parents, students and drivers – especially new drivers.

National Association for Pupil Transportation (NAPT)
Michigan Association for Pupil Transportation (MAPT)

Do you know the rules around a school bus and near school bus stops in the State of Michigan?  Check out school bus safety tips for drivers, students HERE.

Also during National School Bus Safety Week, the State of Michigan, conducts Operation Safe Stop.  This enforcement initiative provides an opportunity to educate drivers on how to safely share the road with buses and provide safety to Michigan’s students as they are loading and unloading at bus stops.*

The bus is like a traffic light.  No lights, think green, and go – safely.  Yellow lights, slow down (do not accelerate) and remember – once the school bus door is opened the lights will immediately change to red and the STOP sign will engage.  Red lights, STOP.

According to Operation Safe Stop, in 2019 This enforcement initiative provides an opportunity to educate drivers on how to safely share the road with buses and provide safety to Michigan’s students as they are loading and unloading at bus stops.  And in October 2019, there were 162 school-bus crashes.*

Scary stuff.  Be careful.  Be aware.  And if you see a big, yellow cheese wagon 🙂 , AKA school bus, err on the side of caution, plan to stop.
